Wired Beauty : An IoT that take care of your skin

Are you dreaming of having a real baby skin? A refined, luminous and velvety texture of skin? Wired Beauty is the start-up about revolutionizing your beauty routine!

We introduced them to you for the first time when we announced projects selected for Look Forward Awards. Wired Beauty and its mask MAPO® Hydra have seduced the members of the jury during the deliberation and  have received the prize of the Experience Award.

Launched in May 2016 by Stanislas Vandier and Jean-Roch Meunier, MAPO® Hydra by Wired Beauty is a medical silicone mask encrusted with numerous sensors which measure the user’s skin health. The mask enables know the characteristics of a skin like its rate of hydration or its nature, but also to follow the evolution of the skin. The sensors transfer data to the smartphone application “Beauty App” in order to receive an accurate and complete analyze of the evolution of its skin. The application also offers cosmetic advice regarding the type of products corresponding to user’s skin. The mask have also temperature sensors which heats the mask in order to increase the hydration efficiency of a cream during its application. Time to say goodbye to its imperfections!

From the future of Wired Beauty to his vision of the digitization of beauty world, Stanislas Vandier, co-founder of Wired Beauty, agreed to answer some of our questions.

Stanislas, as we saw with the CES 2016, innovations developed by your start-up generate a real enthusiasm from high-tech professionals. How did you come up with the idea of developing such innovations? How did the Wired Beauty adventure begin?

Actually, after several years in the cosmetics industry and then in the connected textile industry, I had the intuition that the new frontier of a truly personalized beauty, even more effective, transparent and innovative, will pass through a better knowledge of its skin and its hair, in real life, in real time and not just in lab or in shop. That’s how MAPO® and La Clinique Digitale® were born. Wired Beauty is at the service of skin, living barrier mainly composed of water. Its water concentration plays a key role in cell renewal and its protection. However, every day its is exposed to various aggressions such as sun, pollution and inappropriate dermo-cosmetic routines, leading to dehydration and premature aging. We have gathered wonderful people as scientists, electronics manufacturers and developers around a vision: develop connected objects and services allowing you to better know your skin and your hair but also to optimize and personalize your dermo-cosmetic routines.

MAPO Hydra by Wired BeautyHow does the MAPO® Hydra mask meet a need expressed by consumers?

MAPO® Hydra was designed to allow everyone to follow in real life, at home, how his skin evolves. We also interviewed women in France and Shanghai and added the booster effectiveness of creams! The market is ready for our innovation, we work with institutes and spas to market the product and have already sold 200 products on Kickstarter. We are preparing evolutions of the MAPO® Hydra mask.

We have heard that Wired Beauty is not only a mask but also a whole range of innovative products. Could you tell us a little bit more?

Wired Beauty is connected beauty. After MAPO® Hydra, we launched MAPO® Solar, the first UVA & UVB sensor that can be snapped on textiles (on various supports such as clothing, bags, hats, umbrellas …) provides a solution to the UV aggressions which is an important source of skin aging and pigmentary tasks. As it is in textile, the first Spring-Summer collection was imagined around 3 colors: blue, gray and coral. Internauts were able to choose a limited series marketed at the end of July.

MAPO Solaire by Wired BeautyWhat are the expectations of your consumers regarding the beauty of tomorrow?

They what that beauty adapts itself to each of them and resolves specific issues in a transparent way. Hence the creation of MAPO® Solaire, which allows responsible sunbathing by knowing its phototype thanks to the app La Clinique Digitale®. To know more about your solar routine: Wired Beauty survey.

The beauty industry is constantly renewing. How do you explain such an overwhelming trend of innovation?

In my opinion, this is due to three factors: the fact that beauty is multi-faceted, that the industry invests a lot in innovation and more recently that the digital comes to change everything and for the better! And IoT are part of this new dynamic.

What are the applications of new technologies in the beauty sector?

In the short term, the encapsulated and natural will disrupt formulations. Masks also illustrate the new uses coming from Asia. Instrumental dermo-cosmetic (brushes, hair straighteners among others) also creates new services. Finally, personal measures (your skin, your exposure, the condition of your hair in real life) will revolutionize the way we choose our products but above all the way we will develop them.

For a few years the beauty sector has been experiencing a real surge on the internet thanks to the multiplication of beauty influencers on different supports such as Instagram or Youtube. Do you think that new influencers are necessary to promote a product?

They are a real boost in promoting products. For Wired Beauty, they are even more legitimate because our products are both innovative and useful in the daily life of everyone – like bloggers who are also in real life.

Finally, we wanted to have your opinion as entrepreneur concerning the development of new projects. Do you think it is easier to undertake when you have a significant professional experience?

Not necessarily. I have several examples of people who have worked with me, including trainees, who then set up their own business. What is not an end in itself, there are beautiful adventures in big companies. The important thing is to learn and make things change. For example, at Wired Beauty, we recruit 5 people by the end of the year, all profiles, marketing, crossed engineers / textile, and trainees in order to stretch the limits of connected beauty.

While the world of beauty is invaded by innovations, it seems necessary for companies to stand out. The founders of Wired Beauty are among those who have understood that it is not a trend but a real growth lever. It is because the start-up has positioned consumers at the heart of their concerns that the team can develop products in tune with market expectations whether in BtoC or BtoBtoC. Nevertheless, the question that still can be asked is related to market maturity toward these new products that deeply change the way we consume. If the Asian market seems obvious, Stanislas Vandier seems to be quite confident about the receptivity of French and European market.

We wish him the best for the future of Wired Beauty!
