The london-based, romanian-raised fashion designer Andreea Mandrescu pushes the limits of sensuality by creating a brand new way to dress yourself.

With working on materials et surfaces at the core of her expertise, the artist explore a new feminity , by associating fake and true.

It is no longer about wearing clothes or accessories, but more about with merging with them, like a second skin or a new part of your body.

We met her at the Weareable FashionTech Festival and discussed her work. 

 

What is your background?

Originally from Romania, Andreea Mandrescu moved to Israel when 15 with her family. She graduated from Haifa University in 2003 with BA (Hons) in Fine Arts and English Literature and continued with MA in Fine arts which she graduated in 2005. Although art has being a continuous part of her life, she decided to apply and channel her knowledge back into her first passion which was design. Hence she moved to London, and graduated MA Textile Futures at Central Saint Martins College in 2011.

Then specializing in material, surface and textile design, she developed her own unique signature style of layering different materials and textures in intricate fashion and accessories designs. Amongst the internships that she undertook to further her experience, Andreea worked as in intern at Alexander McQueen in 2010, where she developed designs for lace work for haute couture outfits.

Since the graduation project in 2011 has been a wonderful success in innovation and creativity, she was chosen to present her work during different exhibitions amongst which ‘British-ish Exhibition’ in 2011 at Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Her work was also being displayed at Aston Martin W-One Show Room in 2012, London for material inspiration.

In December 2011, Andreea decided to open her own design studio and label in London (Studio Andreea Mandrescu Ltd. – www.andreeamandrescu.com). She now works as a freelance textile and accessories designer and textile artist. She presents her work at exhibitions and trade fairs, Indigo at Premiere Vision in Paris being one of them.

 

 

You have these amazing conceptual works, tell us about your source of inspiration?

 

“As a designer, my work aims to create a new tactile and visual experience that brings a new perspective to the traditional crafts by implementing them into textile design. The practice is based on research of traditional crafts and mixed materials.”

What is your reflexion behind this project? What is your mission?

“I am a curios type of person, and the curiosity drives to explore and mix different know how techniques, with traditional crafts and new materials.
